Being Lost
The best of you in ignorance is the best of you in Islam when you have understanding from Allah.
All of us are lost.
The Quran mentions a state of being ‘lost’ as a phase of unawareness of a higher truth, the wisdom that comes only from Allah. When we think about being lost, we typically think of those outside the folds of our community — those indulging in acts we consider transgressions, those who subscribe to different beliefs and practices. But the term ‘lost’ can also apply to us believers because there’s always room for improvement, further guidance, and deeper understanding even within our path.
This stage of being ‘lost’ is an essential phase that, however knowledgeable or righteous one might be, without the guidance of Allah, we are left wandering, seeking. The best among us — the prophets — had to go through a phase of being ‘lost’ before they were graced with divine wisdom and purpose.
Sometimes, the path to truth may seem blurred, and error pervades society. In these moments of dissatisfaction, we may find ourselves seeking something purer, uncorrupted by the world’s ills. Just as the Prophet ﷺ turned to solitary contemplation to seek the truth, so must we strive to silence the noise of societal distractions and focus on the path of righteousness.
Caring for orphans creates a reflection of our state of being ‘lost’ and our journey towards the ultimate guidance from Allah. It isn’t merely an act of charity but a moral calling, a spiritual duty for us as Muslims. We are imbued with caring for orphans, just as the prophet cared for his community. We must use this as a guiding principle in our quest for truth and righteousness.
May Allah guide us all in fulfilling our responsibilities towards the orphans in our communities, and let this act of kindness illuminate our path towards attaining higher wisdom.
